We all know its good for us to do something that gets us moving to help strengthen our bodies, increase our mobility and to get our heart rate up. And yes, that’s often why we turn to Zumba Gold, the good old boogie that gives us a fun cardio workout.

But did you also know about some of the hidden health and wellness elements that we sneak into the routines? Your bonus benefits.

Here are five of those gems.

  1. Keeping our wrists active. In our Bolly inspired Parna Parna dance we move our hands as if twisting a lightbulb, it helps to keep or improve our wrist joint mobility so we can keep opening those jars and twist those door handles.

  2. Climbing the stairs. In our new Reggae track, we are lifting those knees high, so our hip joints can keep working for us to get us up steps and stairs.

  3. Balance. We have a specific balance track, testing and increasing our ability to balance on one leg, to stand on tiptoes. As we get older these skills will weaken unless we look after them. Let’s aim to stay balanced. Why, well just to stay upright at the very basic level.

  4. Sit down, sit up. Squats aren't just a torture device. They have a purpose. They keep your legs and hips strong to enable you to sit down and, importantly, get back out of that chair. Lets keep ourselves as independent as possible. Keep calm and keep on squatting.

  5. Cutting sugar cane. Haha, not really, but our Cumbia dance move is based on this. What it is doing is getting us to reach up high and down low with our arms. Anyone want to get that jar out of the top cupboard?

All things I want to be fully able to do for as long as possible, at every age I reach. I’m sure you do to.

Whatever age you are now it’s the right time to start and continue working on these movements, so you can stay as active as possible for as long as possible.
